Four Things People Forget to Put on Their Moving Checklist

Moving your entire home can be a hectic process. Right from the moment you know you will be moving there are dozens of things you will want to get done. From contacting a reputable moving company in Toronto to gathering moving supplies, it is easy to get side-tracked and forget about important things that need to be done.

Four Things for Moving Checklist

The best way to tackle an upcoming move is to make a checklist of things you need to do. Working from a checklist is an easy way to help ensure nothing gets overlooked or forgotten. For each of the tasks on your checklist, you can set deadline dates, such as hiring movers, renting a storage unit if needed, and contacting utilities to schedule transfers, shut-offs, and new hook-ups.

Aside from these checklist items and packing up your home room by room, here are four things many people forget to put on their moving checklist:

  1. Backing up data on computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. It is a good idea to make a backup of all of the data on computers, smartphones and tablets. There are several different backup options, from saving the data on an external hard drive/USB device to backing it up to the cloud. A backup will help you restore any data and get the device running again should something occur during the actual move.
  2. Measuring the rooms in your new home. If you have access to your new home prior to the move, it is a good idea to take measurements to ensure all of your furniture and items will fit. The last thing you want to do is move more than your new home can accommodate. It is easier to make decisions about what to move and sell or donate prior to moving day should you have to get rid of some furniture or other items.
  3. Notifying the post office of your change of address. The post office will help make sure all of your mail gets re-routed to your new home if you remember to inform them of your new address. Just stop by your nearest branch location or submit the request online. Keep in mind there is a fee for this service and there are items Canada Post will not forward. So you will also want to include on your checklist to contact newspapers, magazines, and other shipping services.
  4. Refill/transfer any prescriptions. Depending on where you are moving, it can take a little time to get any prescriptions transferred to your new local pharmacy. You may want to do this ahead of your move, or have your current pharmacy refill your prescriptions to give you time to transfer them after moving.
