Tips for Packing Fragile Items for Your Upcoming Move

Tips for Packing Fragile Items for Your Upcoming Move

Everyone has fragile and breakable items in their homes they will need to pack when they move. These types of items require special care and attention while packing to ensure they arrive safe and sound at your home.

You should have already stocked up on moving boxes and supplies you obtained from your Toronto moving company. If not, you will want to do this first before you start packing up your delicate belongings. In addition, you will want to make sure you have bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, and other types of padding to fill in empty box space.

Once you have everything you need, you will want to create a staging/packing area, like your dining room table for your small and medium-sized fragile items.

  • Step 1: Gather all delicate items from one room at a time and place them on top of the dining room table.
  • Step 2: Put a small amount of Styrofoam peanuts into the bottom of the box.
  • Step 3: Carefully wrap your item in bubble wrap so that it is well protected. This step may take several layers.
  • Step 4: Tape the ends of the bubble wrap closed so it does not come loose.
  • Step 5: Place the item into the box.
  • Step 6: Add Styrofoam peanuts around the item and add another small layer.
  • Step 7: Repeat this process until the box is full.
  • Step 8: At the top of the box, make sure there is a top layer of Styrofoam peanuts.
  • Step 9: Tape the box closed with packing tape.
  • Step 10: Write the contents of the box on the outside.
  • Step 11: Write “FRAGILE” on all four sides of the box in red marker that is easy to read.
  • Step 12: Draw arrows on the sides of the boxes that indicate which way is up.

It is okay to place a few small items together near each other in the same layer when packing. Just make sure they are well padded with bubble wrap so if the bump into each other they will not break.

Packing Large Fragile Items

For larger items, like a huge antique vase, you will want to pack each item in its own box. When selecting a box, make sure it will have sufficient room inside so that there is at least one inch of free space all the way around the object for Styrofoam peanuts or another padding.

Packing Oversized Fragile Items

Talk to your moving company about getting help with these items. Most professional movers will offer special packing services for oversized items to ensure they are packed correctly. The mover may request to come pack these items a few days before the actual move so that everything is ready to go come moving day.
