Five Tips and Tricks for Preparing for a Delayed Move
Sometimes when we move, our new home will not be ready for move in at the same time we need to vacate our current home. These types of moves require a little bit more planning and preparation to ensure it goes smoothly without any issues. To help you prepare, our Toronto moving company is pleased to share these tips and tricks.
1. Make arrangements with your moving company for temporary storage.
Some movers like us, offer temporary climate controlled storage solutions for delayed moves. Using the same company to move and store your items also makes the moving process much easier.
On move out day, everything is loaded onto the moving truck and taken to the moving company’s storage facility and unloaded. All of your items are placed into a secure storage area until you are ready to have them delivered to your new home.
2. Only pack the items you will not need until you can move into your new home.
In most cases, furniture, dishes, beds, dressers, appliances, and other such items are not going to be required in the interim between homes. You probably also have seasonal items, lawn and garden equipment, and other such things you won’t need.
With clothing, you can pack up anything you are not going to be wearing. For instance, you will not need your summer clothes if you are moving in the late winter or early spring.
3. Make sure to take an inventory of your property and label every box.
This step is essential for any move. With delayed moves it is even more important to do in case you need something you packed before you can move into your new home. An accurate inventory will ensure you can let your mover know which box you need so they can retrieve it for you from temporary storage. Once they retrieve it, then you can pick up or make delivery arrangements to get what you need.
4. Put your mail on hold or get a post office box.
Remember to notify the post office you need to stop your mail temporarily. You may want to get a post office box for a short period if you want to get your mail daily. Otherwise, you will have to make occasional trips to the post office during normal hours to pick up any held mail.
5. Schedule your move in date with your moving company.
Once you have a set closing date on your new home or date you can take possession of your new rental home, call your mover to schedule the delivery of your items. Ideally, you will want to try to give your mover as much notice as possible to ensure your items are delivered to your new home as quickly as possible.
